When a job will not start
START is dim and there is an amber message. The screen is not broken and your PIN is fine. Here is what it means and who to tell.
Nothing. This walkthrough is about something you will see, not something you do.
1What you are looking at
The job is on your board. You can read it. But:
- START is dim
- above the buttons there is an amber box
The amber box says Waiting for job order approval, and underneath, Your supervisor can release it.
Sometimes it says Added work — waiting for approval instead. That means the job itself is fine, but extra work was added to it and the extra work has not been approved.
2What it means
Every job has to be approved before any work starts on it.
This one has not been approved yet.
Nothing is broken. Your PIN is fine. The screen is working correctly.
3What to do
Tell your supervisor.
That is all you can do, and it is genuinely all that is needed. They release the job, and then START works normally.
Do not keep pressing the dim button.
It will not start the job, and nothing on the screen changes. People press it five or six times, decide the screen is faulty, and go and find something else to do — which costs far more time than telling somebody.
The button is dimmed rather than hidden, and there is a sentence beside it rather than just a colour.
A missing button looks like a fault. A dim button with no explanation looks like a fault. The job stays where it is, in the place you expect, and the screen tells you in words why it will not go — so you can act on it in seconds instead of guessing.
4Everything else still works
The lock is only on starting this job.
Work you have already started keeps running normally. You can put it on hold, pick it back up, and finish it. Other jobs on the board are unaffected.
What happens next
Once your supervisor releases the job, the amber box goes and START works as usual.
If it goes wrong

| Every job on the board is dim | Something is wrong with the approval setup rather than with these jobs. Tell your supervisor, and say it is all of them — that is the useful detail. |
