Take-Downs And Maintenance

The two trips that are not deliveries — one brings a sign back, the other belongs to no job at all.

Three kinds of trip share the board and move up the same ladder. What differs is what they point at, and what finishing one does.

Kind Points at Finishing it
Delivery a job settles the job
Take-down a job settles nothing
Maintenance a customer, and no job nothing to settle

1Taking a sign down

Add a take-down offers jobs whose sign still has to come down — a job with an open Take-Down step and no take-down trip already booked.

The extra field is Where the sign is now, so the crew knows what they are going to.

Warning

The button is not always there.

It appears only when at least one job is waiting for a take-down. No candidates, no button — which is correct, and looks like a missing feature if you do not know it.

Why it works this way

A take-down settles nothing, and that is the whole reason it exists.

On a relocation the sign comes down on one trip and goes up on another. If the first trip settled the job, the project would be reported as delivered while the sign sat at the factory waiting to be refurbished, and the customer had seen nothing.

So the take-down completes its own step and leaves the job running. The delivery is a second trip, later.

2A repair visit

Add a maintenance job asks for a customer and what needs doing — there is no project.

Note

Having no project is what makes it maintenance. It is not a flag somebody sets; it is the absence of a job. Which is also why the address is asked for here: a delivery gets one from its job, and this has no job to ask.

3Finishing a take-down

The last rung reads Sign is down, and it asks the one question the trip exists to answer:

Back at the factory it is here, and probably needs work
Taken to the new premises it went straight there

The answer is required by the system, not just by the form. Where the sign is now is exactly the fact that goes missing when nobody is made to answer it — and nothing else in the application records it.

What happens next

A take-down completes its Take-Down step and leaves everything else alone. The job carries on, and the sign going back up is booked separately.

A maintenance job simply finishes. Nothing is settled because there is nothing to settle.

If it goes wrong

“Add a take-down” is missing. No job is waiting for one. A job qualifies by having an open step named Take-Down — which comes from the relocation routing, or is added to the job’s flow by hand.

The take-down will not finish. You have not said where the sign went. It is refused in the service, so it surfaces as a refusal rather than a red field.

A maintenance job has nowhere to go. The address is required, and is taken from the customer record when you leave it blank. A customer with no address on file has to be given one here.

A relocation shows two open trips. Correct. The take-down this week and the delivery next week are both open, and the board is the only place you see them together.
